Fire-Wise Deck & Outdoor Kitchen
Outdoor dining for a family in a High Fire Hazard Severity Zone — a rebuilt deck under an adjustable louvered pergola, an outdoor kitchen, and materials chosen to be beautiful and wildfire-smart at once.
Every material chosen twice: once for dinner, once for fire.
This Orinda family lives in a High Fire Hazard Severity Zone — which shapes every material and detail decision in the landscape, but doesn't have to shape the life they want outside. The ask is simple: a real place to cook and eat outdoors.
The design rebuilds the deck under an adjustable louvered pergola — shade when the sun is high, open sky when it isn't — with an outdoor kitchen alongside. I vet every material and detail two ways: how it looks and lives, and how it behaves in a fire zone. An outdoor kitchen near a wood structure triggers its own layer of fire-code review, so fire-code review is part of the design from the first drawing.
