Woodside Woodland Garden
Dry-stacked stone walls along a curving drive under the redwoods, planted with California natives.
Stone walls for a woodland drive.
On this Woodside property, a long drive curves up through redwoods and oaks. The job was to hold its edges and make the slopes along it feel like part of the woods.
Low dry-stacked fieldstone walls now follow the drive, stepping up the slope in tiers. Large boulders sit in the wall face and in the planting, so the stonework reads as part of the hillside rather than something added to it.
The planting stays woodland: Pacific Coast iris, penstemon and dogwood under the existing trees, with a deep mulch to hold the soil while it fills in.
The design and the build were both mine: Seven Scapes, the design-build practice I ran at the time, built the walls over the winter of 2011–12.
